I’m not quite sure what to expect from NSW based festival Splendour in the Grass this year. There is definitely a real threat to the festivals existence with all of the legal kerfuffles happening in NSW at the moment.
Heres hoping it won’t affect the three day event too much, as Splendour in the Grass has the reputation of being one of Australia’s premier music festivals. They also announced earlier this year that they had secured the North Byron Parklands as their permanent home proving they don’t intend to go away anytime soon.
With everything still looking good to go and a date set for a line up release on Wednesday it’s time to participate in my favourite activity:
LINE UP PREDICTIONS BABY!!!!!!
Fuji Rock released their line up this week and given it is usually a good indication of who will play at Splendour I am good and ready to get the rumour mill pumping.
Let us begin.
HEADLINERS:
CHEMICAL BROTHERS
LIKELIHOOD – QUITE LIKELY
Not only do they have a huge gap in their touring schedule between playing Glastonbury and Fuji Rock, they’re releasing a new album on the 12th April and have an absolute string of bangers. Who wouldn’t want to hear Hey Girl, Hey Boy or Galvanize live?
SIA
LIKELIHOOD – MAYBE
Our favourite wig wearing woman SIA would be a VERY cool addition to the Splendour line up. There is no doubt she would be well received by Splendour audiences because who doesn’t love a good singalong sitting up on the amphitheatre banks half cut with your best mates. Yeah I know her 2017 Australian tour wasn’t received very well but I think she’s a legend and people suck. However her only tour plans for this year are Fuji Rock so that’s not very encouraging.
TAME IMPALA
LIKELIHOOD – EXTREMELY LIKELY
Praise the lord because Kevin Parker is BACK! He is set to take Tame Impala on a huge world tour this year including Glastonbury (!!) and that little festival called Coachella (!!!!). With a new album almost an absolute certainty it would be cruel for him not to play to adoring Australian audiences at Splendour. Here’s his new single Patience which I am in love with at the moment.
JANELLE MONAE
LIKELIHOOD – LIKELY
She is playing Fuji Rock festival this year and a has had an incredible 2018 with multiple Grammy nominations for her kick ass album Dirty Computer. If her Grammys performance is anything to go by her live show will be amazing. I’ve been following Monae for a very long time and would love to see her on stage at Splendour this year.
FLUME
LIKELIHOOD – VERY LIKELY
There is no doubt Australia has been waiting for their golden boy of music to return. With the release of his impressive mixtape ‘Hi This Is Flume’ and potential for a full album the hope for another Flume headline of Splendour is quite likely. Although Flume headlined the festival in 2016, closing out a packed amphitheatre on the Sunday. If there is one thing I know Splendour loves to do, it’s regurgitate the same line ups from Splendours gone by. This would start off Flumes touring schedule for the year. Which, given his nature it kind of seems like a Flume thing to do.
TRAVIS SCOTT
LIKELIHOOD – MAYBE BUT PROBABLY NOT
He did have one of the most popular songs of 2018 but I don’t know if after doing the Half-time Show at the Super Bowl and having a hugely successful nationwide tour/theme park Splendour is really his thing anymore. He is definitely due for some Australian shows after his last performances here were aaall the way back in 2016.
I see more of a big scale nationwide Astroworld tour being more likely in 2019.
SOLANGE
LIKELIHOOD – PROBABLY ONLY IN MY DREAMS
After dropping my favourite album of the year to date ‘When I Get Home’ nothing would please me more than seeing a Knowles sister on the Splendour line up. She does have a history of playing in Australia after her incredible shows at Vivid Sydney and she is also playing Coachella this year. The dates line up for her to be free for the Splendour weekend but as much as I can try will it into existence I just don’t really see it happening.
