As someone who doesn’t own a car or work in an office that plays the radio all day it’s pretty difficult for me to listen to a great deal of Triple J. I do, however, spend the better part of my days scrolling through various social media feeds and I think I manage to get a pretty good idea of what’s going on.
This year’s Hottest 100 Countdown will be the second time the broadcasting has avoided its usual spot on Australia Day. Instead, it will take place Sunday 27th allowing for what will inevitably be for most, a three to four-day bender. The celebration of Australia Day is currently up for debate within Australia and I personally admire the way Triple J manages to align itself at the forefront of social change. With that being said they are shockingly bad at hiding their favourite songs because I manage to get in an average of one hour broken listening time a week and can guess who is going to do well this year.
From my perspective this year’s outright winner is going to be a tough race between Confidence – Ocean Alley, Losing It – Fisher and This Is America – Donald Glover. I see that Sportsbet also has good odds on Dinosaurs – Ruby Fields and I Said Hi- Amy Shark but I don’t personally like either song so I’m going to ignore that bit of information. Maybe its because I’m not actually Australian and I find the accent a bit harsh on the ears, I dunno. My blog, my rules.
Speaking of my opinion something that would make me a very happy girl is Sicko Mode managing to sneak in the top five. Rap music has never charted super well in the Hottest 100 until last year where Kendrick Lamar managed to take the top spot. Last year’s rap releases were just so significant I’m hoping there will be a much bigger presence in the countdown this year.
To take out the top spot this year, my money is on Fisher – Losing with This is America in second. I don’t know how many house parties, clubs and gigs I went to last year that played that song. It’s the ultimate tune to have a boogie to and its nominated for a Grammy for crying out loud!!! Fisher has turned into somewhat of an Australian icon through his use of social media. If you haven’t been on his Instagram yet, you’re in for a treat. He seems like an absolute legend and I hope he if he doesn’t take home the Grammy he can take home the number one spot this afternoon!
